The major areas of research are: cloning and expression of mammalian genes; production of hormones and other bio-molecules of medical importance by genetic engineering route using bacterial, insect and mammalian cell systems; molecular biology of infectious diseases; development of DNA based diagnostic probes and vaccines; molecular mechanism of herbal drug action; micropropagation of medicinal plants and high yielding individuals; enhancing the yield of secondary metabolites; use of bioreactors and immobilized cells; transgenic plants; in vivo and in vitro induced a biotic factors and their impact on plant growth, differentiation and secondary metabolite biosynthesis; and biochemical and molecular characterization of stress resistance in plants.

Our future plans includes :
Study of the alternate routes for the production of molecules of bio-medical importance has been very successful. Presently we have achieved the production of gonadotropins in mammalian cell expression system. This aspect will be expanded to include other hormones especially growth hormone and also certain other medically important compounds: using different expression systems.

Development of DNA probes for genomic analysis as well as for diagnosis of certain infectious and genetic diseases.

Study of certain diseases at molecular level and development of new generation vaccines (including DNA vaccines) for these diseases. At first stage, the work on typhoid and leishmaniasis will be started which will be extended to other diseases also.

Cataloguing the genetic diversity of medicinal plants and development of genetic markers for high yielding strains. Enhancement of intermediatory metabolites by metabolic engineering of these plants.

Micropropagation of plants of medical importance and multiplication of high yielding plants. Use of plant tissue culture for adaptation of plants to local atmospheric conditions by biotechnological approaches.

Development of transgenic and engineered plants for expression of useful genes of heterologous and homologous origin to develop stress resistant varieties as well as produce biomolecule of medical importance like vaccine etc. in plants.
