The major areas of research include; isolation, purification and physiochemical characterization of proteins and enzymes, mechanism of protein folding, protein stability/conformational changes under stress conditions and role of oxidative stress in the mechanism of action of drugs/chemicals known to cause liver damage.
The Department is planning to establish a Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory for performing advanced level diagnostic tests. This lab will have a close collaboration with Majeedia Hospital. Shortly the Department will start specialization in Immunology at M.Sc. Final level. Students admitted to M.Sc. will be given a choice of opting for this specialization in the II year after successfully completing M.Sc. Part I. Having a strong background of biochemistry, the students will be better equipped to study immunology, a field which has gained in importance in the last two decades.. Subsequently the Department will be in a position to start a P.G. Diploma in Clinical Biochemistry and Lab Technology.
