Thrust Areas :

The major areas of research include the role of elements in biological systems, toxic manifestations and abnormalities caused by the excessive exposure to or the deficiency of elements, Mechanistic aspects of chemical carcinogenesis, oxidative stress, and chemo prevention aspects of disease control using herbal preparations. The department has programmes on Neuro-behavioural Toxicology, Predictive Toxicology and Environmental Monitoring, Risk Assessment and Safety evaluation, Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology, Metal Toxicology, Chemoprevention and Nutrition Toxicology and Analytical Toxicology.

The department has proposed several Postgraduate Diplomas of one year duration. These diplomas are intended to provide trained man power for industries in the area of environmental monitoring auditing, poison control, industrial hygiene, safety evaluation, risk assessment, environmental health protection, evaluation of damage to ecology, contamination assessment of food and cosmetic products.

The department is involved in consultancy on a small scale for LD50, MTD and immunotoxicity studies. Department has standardized techniques of in vitro (Ames test) and in vivo assessment of mutagenicity (genotoxicity). These techniques are used for evaluation of mutagenic hazard associated with drugs and chemicals. Evaluation of drugs for mutagenicity is pre-requisite for new drug development. We can cater to pharmaceutical industry in this direction. Our laboratories have enough potential to develop ecotoxicology environmental consultancy in the Department. Efforts will be made to upgrade the Department in terms of space, equipment and manpower and get recognition from various government agencies including Central and State Pollution Control Boards for assessing air, water and soil quality, risk assessment and environmental audit of industrial units. This will be a revenue generation activity as well.
