He was awarded Doctor of Philosophy for the research entitled “Studies on reduction of toxic endosperm specific proteins, ricin and RCA in castor (Ricinus communis L.) through post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) approaches”. Further, he earned MBA in Human Resources Management and 4 Post-graduate Diplomas in Patents Law, Technology Management in Agriculture, Scientific Writing and Bioinformatics. With a strong commitment to teaching and research, his career spans more than a decade in modern biology.

Dr. Ashraf’s research interest revolves around molecular biology and biotechnology of bioactive compounds in plants, development of plant transgenics with value addition, in vitro biology to decipher the role and mechanism of natural products, application of molecular markers in fingerprinting of germplasm of crop plants and settling issues pertaining to adulteration of medicinal plants. He has been instrumental in developing putative castor transgenics with reduced ricin and RCA levels. Further, his research team at Jamia Hamdard has been successful in developing molecular markers which could facilitate true-to-type identification and authentication of medicinal plants. He has mentored dissertation of over 50 post-graduate students. Currently, 5 students are working towards consolidating their Ph.D. thesis under his guidance and counsel. He has attended and presented his research in several International and National seminars and conferences. He has published research articles in peer-reviewed National and International journals of repute and also authored chapters in edited books published by Springer, CRC Taylor & Francis etc.
