The Legal Aid Committee, Hamdard Institute of Legal Studies and Research, School of Law, Jamia Hamdard has been actively working for the welfare of society since its formalisation in 2018. The Committee comprises of One Faculty Convenor, Students Convenors and Student members of HILSR. Various workshops, orientation programs, interactive sessions, social outreach programs have been organized by the committee in collaboration with different organisations like Mahila Panchayat (Dakshin Puri), Delhi Legal Services Authority etc.
The Legal Aid Committee, Hamdard Institute of Legal Studies and Research, School of Law, Jamia Hamdard in collaboration with Delhi Legal Aid Services Authority (South) has established the Legal Services Clinic at Ground Floor, Central Library Building, Jamia Hamdard and the Legal Literacy Club at Second Floor, Central Library Building, Jamia Hamdard for providing the welfare of the underprivileged of the society.
The official inauguration ceremony of Legal Services Clinic and establishment of Legal Literacy Club at HILSR was organised on 17th February 2022, Thursday. The event was graced by the auspicious presence of esteemed dignitaries such as Sh. Kawal Jeet Arora, Delhi Higher Judicial Services, Ld. Member Secretary, DSLSA and Sh. Gautam Manan, Delhi Higher Judicial Services, Ld. Special Secretary, DSLSA, Ms. Namrita Aggarwal, Delhi Higher Judicial Services, Ld. Additional Secretary, DSLSA and Ms. Nabeela Wali, Delhi Judicial Services, Ld. Secretary, DLSA (South) and Mr. S. M. Khan, Director, Jamia Hamdard Residential Coaching Academy.
The purpose for establishing the Legal Services Clinic at HILSR is ensure the predominance of Article 39A of Constitution of India which provides for Equal justice and Free Legal Aid as under:
“The State shall secure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice, on a basis of equal opportunity, and shall, in particular, provide free legal aid, by suitable legislation or schemes or in any other way, to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.”
Objective of establishing the Legal Services Clinic is to provide the free legal assistance to the underprivileged people who live in the nearby vicinity of Jamia Hamdard especially the Sangam Vihar, Tuglaqabad, Tigri area. Also, to train the students of BALLB about the practical aspects of Advocacy which has been established as essential part of their course like interaction with those who need legal assistance, client counselling etc. Since its establishment, A Legal Aid Counsel visits every Thursday on behalf of Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) South to provide the free legal aid to those who visits the Clinic for free legal aid.
